每日郵報報導，科學家對植物人病患提出一連串預設問題，並利用功能性磁振造影（fMRI）觀察病患腦部活動。

透過功能性磁振造影可發現，這名病患會以「是」或「不是」回應多個問題，如「你現在是在醫院嗎？」這名病患透過儀器回答，他知道自己的名字，也知道自己正在醫院。

研究人員歐文說，這項技術可以測試出那些病患是有意識的，也能讓有意識病患更容易傳達心願；科學家計畫利用這種方式與無行為回應能力的病患溝通，或許會發現部分病患遭誤診為植物人。
