「醫師！我刷牙會流血。」許多民眾到嘉義市維欣牙醫醫美聯合診所向院長邱國杰求診，檢查出是患了牙周病，邱國杰說，牙周病成人患病率高達80至90％，是只能控制無法痊癒慢性病，醫學研究發現，牙周病與心血管疾病有關連，又是成人失牙原因，不可輕忽。

邱國杰說，牙周病是指支持牙齒穩固周圍組織生病了，當身體健康及營養發生障礙，牙齦與牙周支持組織立刻改變，抵抗力減弱時，外界刺激及細菌很容易造成牙周組織損傷。

「牙周病與全身健康，已是國內外醫學專家關注焦點！」邱國杰指出，目前牙科最常見關係是牙周病與糖尿病，以及心血管疾病關係甚為密切，調查也發現，有心血管疾病患者，罹患牙周病是正常人的4倍。

邱院長強調，牙周病患者一定要尋求牙周專科醫師治療，治療步驟有可能造成局部輕微出血，為避免治療引發感染，治療前必須要服用預防性抗生素。
